Unfinished Bathroom Vanities at Builders Surplus
Unfinished vanities give you full control over the final color and finish. Shipped raw wood, they’re ready to be sanded, stained, painted, or sealed to match the existing bathroom or to a custom color you can’t get from a factory line.
Builders Surplus YeeHaa carries unfinished bathroom vanities in popular sizes and door styles, with most options available to take home the same day.
Why Choose an Unfinished Vanity?
Most bathroom vanities sold today come prefinished from the factory in fixed colors. Unfinished vanities exist for projects where that doesn’t work.
Match an Existing Finish
If you’re updating a bathroom and want the new vanity to coordinate with trim, doors, or cabinets already in place, finishing the vanity on site is the only way to get a precise color match.
Pick any Paint or Stain
Factory finishes come in a limited palette. Unfinished gives you the entire paint or stain aisle to work with.
Lower Upfront Cost
Without factory finishing labor and materials, unfinished vanities typically run 20 to 35% less than prefinished equivalents.
Touch-Ups Are Easy
Scratches and dings on a site-finished vanity can be repaired with leftover stain or paint. With a factory finish, even small damage often means replacing the door.
Solid Construction
Unfinished vanities are usually built from solid hardwood (oak, maple, birch, or pine), not veneered MDF, so they accept stain evenly and look better as they age.
Common Unfinished Vanity Sizes
Standard bathroom vanity sizes match the most common bathroom configurations:
- 24 inches: Half baths, guest baths, and powder rooms. Single sink.
- 30 inches: The most common full-bath size. Single sink with reasonable counter space and storage below.
- 36 inches: Master bath single-sink vanity. Extra counter space and more drawer storage.
- 48 inches: Single or double sink. The threshold size for a comfortable double vanity.
- 60 inches: Almost always a double-sink configuration in larger master baths.
- 72 inches: Spacious double vanity for large master baths.
Depths are usually 21 inches (standard) or 18 inches (compact). Heights typically run 32 inches (traditional) to 36 inches (counter-height, easier on the back for taller users).
How To Finish a Vanity at Home
A durable bathroom finish requires patience and the right materials.
- Sand the wood. Start with 120 grit, finish with 220. The smoother the wood, the better the finish takes. Wipe off all dust with a tack cloth between grits.
- Apply wood conditioner if you’re staining. This evens out the grain so soft and hard spots absorb stain at the same rate. Critical on pine and maple.
- Stain in thin coats with a clean rag. Wipe off excess after a few minutes. Multiple thin coats look better than one heavy coat.
- Topcoat with a bathroom-safe finish. A water-based polyurethane is the most forgiving and cleans up easily. Two to three coats with light sanding between each gives a kitchen and bath durable surface. For a painted finish, use a cabinet-grade enamel or alkyd, primed first with a bonding primer.
- Pay extra attention to vulnerable areas. The bottom edges, the underside of the toe kick, and any cut edges should be sealed too. Water lands on the floor first and wicks into untreated wood.
- Let the finish cure before installing the vanity top. A full cure takes about a week. Cabinets installed before full cure can dent or stick to the countertop when set.
Who Should Buy an Unfinished Vanity?
Unfinished vanities make the most sense for:
- Homeowners matching an existing bathroom with a unique finish or stain.
- DIYers with the time, space, and tools to finish properly before install.
- Budget-driven remodels where the labor of finishing in-house is worth the savings.
- Specialty paint or custom color projects unavailable as factory finishes.
